Welcome to Manor House Library

With regret, we have now closed the public library services at all three V22 libraries.
Please note that Manor House itself is open as usual, those using daycare facilities, booked into function rooms and visiting midwives are not affected by the library closure.
Across the world public buildings are being shut in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and in the UK we have been given a series of directives that are proving difficult to manage.

Specifically –
• We are unable to obtain sufficient hand sanitiser and other cleaning products to keep the libraries well stocked.
• We are unable to satisfy guidelines on restricting the numbers of people in the library, or keep safe distances between users, or users and staff.

In addition, we have a large number of volunteers who fall into the ‘at-risk’ age group who are being asked to self-isolate.
We recognise that it is everyone’s responsibility to help protect our vulnerable populations and mitigate over-stretching our health services by reducing the transmission of Covid-19.

We will continue to follow guidelines and take advice from Lewisham Library Service and national and local authorities. We do of course understand the importance of the library service to many and have not taken this decision lightly.

Books may be returned as usual through the drop boxes where applicable at all lewisham libraries and extensions have been granted on all books. See the main page at Lewisham Libraries web site for further information around book borrowing, extensions and fines at this time. Please also use the online resources at your disposal, again see the links on the Lewisham Libraries web site.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all users of the libraries, as well as our staff, and to express our gratitude to all the volunteers who have worked to keep this fantastic community resource going for as long as possible. We all hope to return soon.

Stay safe and well.

Manor House and its library are part of the Lewisham Library service, staffed and run in partnership with the local community, V22 Foundation, and V22 Communities, a registered charity that also operates Forest Hill Library and Sydenham Library.

If you have any questions, or want to join our team of volunteers then please email info@mhlibrary.co.uk.

Community library, community space

Manor House Library is a community-run library. The library is situated on Old Road, Lee, in the South-East London Borough of Lewisham. Like many local authorities, Lewisham Council have been under budgetary pressures and, after a long consultation process, decided not to close any of its libraries. Manor House was one of four libraries considered for transfer to the ‘community library model’. After a tender process we were delighted that our bid was approved by Mayor & Cabinet to manage the building and run the library in continued partnership with Lewisham Libraries.

In practice this means that you are likely to be greeted by a volunteer when you come to Manor House, although we still boast a number of trained librarians and library staff amongst our volunteers. Manor House is run by a manager who has experience of working in several libraries and he is supported by other senior staff members with a great deal of experience. Lewisham employ two Senior Library Assistants who are designated to look after Manor House, and a further team of Community Engagement Librarians spread their time among Lewisham’s Community Libraries, including Manor House. V22 also run Forest Hill Library, which is the busiest of all the community libraries with the longest opening hours of any community library in the country.

Of course Manor House is more than just a library, with roughly a quarter of a million visitors per year, we also have some fantastic air-conditioned rooms available to hire for functions, classes, workshops, meetings and parties. See our Contact page for more details.

Help us Build for the Future

A community-run library means just that, and we really need the support of our community to keep our library great and to make it even better. Please consider volunteering your time to help us run the library or to provide additional related services. Click here for more information. We are particularly interested in finding volunteers who can help out at the weekend, especially Saturday. No experience is necessary, we will provide training on the job, with supervisor level training available for those wishing to progress. We’re lucky enough to have had at least two retired librarians and several former library staff among our volunteers, as well as having four volunteers who are currently librarians or professional library staff amongst our ranks.

We accept donations of good quality books, CDs, DVD’s and records at Manor House. We have occasional book sales on site (look out for us at Manor House Gardens Festival!) and we also have a book and record shop – Leaf & Groove – in Forest Hill where everything we sell gets ploughed back into the V22 libraries fund.

Keep talking to Us
Please do contact us if you have concerns about any aspect of the library services provided. We want to hear from you – good or bad – and if you think there is something you can offer in support then we would very much like to have that conversation too.
